As you get older, it becomes crucial to be stretching on a regular basis because you don’t have those advantages of youth as much. So, you do have to work harder for the benefits of youth. However, it’s amazing how youthful you can be or become even in your 70s, 80s, and even 90s. The more that you work on your physical body, the better you can maintain your youthfulness.

Diving a little bit deeper into this, there are some specific things to address. One of the big traits, especially as people get older, is they tend to lean forward when they walk. They might be bent over at their hip, then they’re leaning forward and often what accompanies that is back pain, stiffness, and all sorts of problems. Usually, this forward lean is caused by what we call hip flexor tightness, which is the tightness in the front of the legs that are pulling the person forward. Because they are pulled forward, they bend at the hip, and so the hip flexor muscles are kind of the culprits here.

Why does this tend to happen? Usually, because as we get older we tend to do more things that are related to sitting such as reading, socializing, and talking to people. Maybe we’re not as physically active as we used to be and that’s why you’ll see a lot of people who are retired now and they may not have this problem. They’re up and they’re very active. They’re playing pickleball and all sorts of things.

Now, there are amazing things that people are doing to remain physically active. We’re seeing a generation now where they’re not taking getting older lying down, or they’re not accepting getting older the way their parents did. They know the benefits of exercise and they’re acting on it, which is very exciting.
